Description

DELACROIX Eugène (1798-1863).

L.A.S. "Eug. Delacroix", [ June 1843 ?], to "My good friend" [the painter Louis-Auguste SCHWITER ?]; 2 pages in-8. [The painter and draughtsman Louis-Auguste SCHWITER (1805-1889) was also a collector of antiques; Delacroix made a magnificent portrait of him in 1826 (London, National Gallery)]. "My good friend, I have persuaded myself that you would have more means than anyone else of procuring for me by your connections in England, the regulations of the various societies which English painters have formed among themselves at various times for exhibitions, such as British artists, water colours &c &c. I have a great need to consult this information and you would be very grateful if you could provide it to me in the near future and assuming that it will not cause you any trouble... He has a thousand thanks to address to him for his participation in the decision which gave him a year's leave of absence from service in the National Guard; he will show his gratitude also to M. Dehègue who, on his recommendation, contributed to it. "I would have been telling you all this, if I were not leaving for Vichy and if I were not overcome by all sorts of affairs"...
