English school; late 18th century. "Portrait of a lady. Half-colour engraving and illuminated. It presents faults and it is trimmed. Measurements: 33 x 26 cm; 39,5 x 29 cm (frame). In this work, the author presents us a portrait of a lady of delicate elegance, of soft beauty and introspective expression, who directs her lost look towards the right zone of the composition, fixing her sight on something that is outside the representation. The figure is dressed in the fashion of the period, with subtle, elegant clothes that denote her high social class and enhance the melancholy atmosphere of the portrait. The soft, balanced colour combinations convey the idealism in his portrayal, following the "grand style" that was imposed by Reynolds and made him one of the most highly regarded and copied artists of the English 18th century. Joshua Reynols, one of the leading 18th-century English painters, specialised in portraiture. He was a member of the Royal Academy and the Royal Society. Reynolds began his career as an artist in his native London and later moved to Rome in 1970, where he lived for two years and absorbed the knowledge of Italian painting and the technique of the great Renaissance painters. In fact, Reynols is known for defending the so-called "grand style", a term that comes from a reflection on classical statuary and Italian painting by Reni and Titian, among other Italian masters. Among his works are "Portrait of Colonel George K. H. Coussmaker", 1770-80, now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, "The Waldegrave Sisters", 1770-80 and The Duchess of Devonshire and her Son, 1786, among others.
