Rectangular box inlaid on all sides on an ebony background in rosewood frames with a basket with a flowering and foliage bouquet and a bird on an entablature on the lid, the sides decorated with foliage and flowers, the interior inlaid with foliage. Surrounded by Pierre Gole Louis XIV period H. 11 W. 36.5 D. 27 cm Accidents and restorations to the veneer, lifts, feet to be refixed, modified lock Note : The marquetry of native wood, decorated with floral scrolls and bird, links our chest to the creations of Pierre Gole (circa 1620-1685), a leading cabinetmaker of the reign of Louis XIV. Pierre Gole, of Dutch origin, settled in Paris around 1640 and became the "king's cabinetmaker" in 1651. In addition to marquetry of precious woods, he also made many pieces in tortoiseshell and metal marquetry. His inventory after death dated January 1685 mentions, in addition to many pieces of furniture, several boxes. Bibliography: Th. H.
