Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) - The Annunciation / Description: This is one of a series of six plates showing 'Masterpieces' depicting the Life of the Virgin engraved by Hendrick Goltzius (New Hollstein 8-13). Annunciation: The Archangel holding a lilly, addresses the serene Virgin, kneeling on a cushion, the dove of the Holy Spirit radiating light above, surrounded by billowing clouds and cavorting putti; fifth state. 1594. With monogram and date ion the tablet: "HG / Ao.1594" Latin dedication to William V of Bavaria in lower margin, verses by Schonaeus: "Pone metum ... / ... venerabitur orbis.". Publishers address of Visscher and Schenk in lower right corner. / Dimensions: 47,20 x 35,30 Good impression in good condition on watermarked laid paper (French lily) with full plate border and good margins.
