Hendrik Goltzius (1558-1607) - The Three Fates - 1588 / Description: The three goddesses of fates in a landscape. The standing goddess of Fate, Clotho, holds the distaff, with the raw flax in her other hand. The sitting Lachesis, seen from the back, holds the bobbin and measures the thread. The left goddess of Fates, the ancient Atropos, cuts the thread with scissors ; first state published by Goltzius; Signed HG Invent. Allegorical scene with Zephirus on a cloud in top right corner, blowing flowers towards the goddess Flora who holds up a bouquet at left, landscape with Mount Parnassus below with Apolla and the Nine Muses at right and the Hours and the Charities at left, a rire labelled 'Pindus' at centre, the winds 'Lybs' and 'Corus' in top corners.
