Jacques Callot (1592-1635) - Fight across the fence / Description: Fight across the fence: a fight opposing two men armed with lances and separated by a fence, in a ballroom with vaulted, coffered ceiling, and people seated in tiers in the background. With title and production detail: 'Jac. Callot In. et fec.'. Number 9 added by hand in brown ink in bottom right corner. The watermark in the paper (Lieure 35) and the absence of a fold suggest this is one of the extremely rare impressions made before the publication in Humbert's 'Le Combat à la Barrière' in 1627) as mentioned by Lieure. Lieure describes the Hubert's work as: 'Contenant les premières epreuves d'une des plus belles suites de l'oeuvre de Callot. . / Dimensions: 15,30 x 24,10 cm Excellent early impression with good plate tone, in very good condition.
