Jacques Callot (1592-1635) - Entry of Charles IV Duke of Lorraine in a ballroom / Description: The entry of Charles IV Duke of Lorraine in a ballroom with vaulted, coffered seiling, and people seated in seated in tiers on the sides; in the middle of the room, page boys and men; in the background, the float carrying the Duke enters the room. With title and production detail: 'Jac. Callot In. et fec.'. The hard to read watermark (probably Lieure 35) and the absence of a fold suggest this is one of the extremely rare impressions made before the publication in Humbert's 'Le Combat à la Barrière' in 1627) as mentioned by Lieure. Lieure describes the Hubert's work as: 'Contenant les premières epreuves d'une des plus belles suites de l'oeuvre de Callot. . / Dimensions: 15,30 x 24,30 cm Good early impression with good plate tone, in good condition with small defect and worm hole near right middle margin. / Literature: Hollstein 1-6 (one of the series of six) Le Blanc 1854-89 II.195.314-319 (whole series).
