Saint Ignatius of Loyola - José de Ibarra (Nueva Galicia, 1688 - Mexico City, in 1756) colonial school of New Spain, present-day Mexico Oil on tropical wood board. Measurements: 27 x 23 cm. He was born in Guadalajara, Nueva Galicia, in 1688 and died in Mexico City, in 1756. He was a disciple of Juan Correa and received the influence of Cristóbal de Villalpando and Juan Rodríguez Juárez. He was one of the most famous and prolific painters of the viceroyalty. He cultivated, above all, religious painting, centered on the cathedral of Mexico. For the cathedral of Puebla he created groups such as the one formed by The Immaculate Conception, The Assumption, The Invocation of Mary by Jesus Child and the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, located around the choir. For the metropolitan cathedral of Mexico he made, among others, the paintings of the altarpiece of the Purísima Concepción chapel. In the chapel of San José, of the Jesuit novitiate of Tepotzotlán, are the Patrimony of Saint Joseph, the Transit of Saint Joseph and The Flight into Egypt. His entire professional life was marked by his interest in participating with his colleagues in all those initiatives dedicated to protecting the intellectual components of the art of painting. This led him to be part of a painting academy organized by the Rodríguez Juárez brothers and to collaborate with Miguel Cabrera in all his initiatives related to this topic. He made several works for the Apostolic College of Propaganda Fide of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Zacatecas (current Museum of Guadalupe), among them, the images that I share with you on this occasion: The Wedding at Cana, Rest in the Flight to Egypt, Saint Joseph and the Corregidors of Zacatecas, and Santa Catalina de Alejandría.
