[Pierre RAMUS]. P. de LA RAMEE. Grammaire... In-8, soft vellum with covers, smooth mute spine, traces of laces ( Vintage binding). Brunet, IV-1099 // Cioranescu, 18884. (10f.)-211 / *8, **2 (last blank), A-N8, O2 / 170 x 100 mm. Second edition and first printed in non-phonetic script. Pierre Ramus, who was born in Cuth (Vermandois) in 1515 and died in Paris in 1572 during the St. Bartholomew's Day, was one of the leading humanist scholars of the 16th century. A professor of eloquence and philosophy, and a fierce supporter of new ideas, he defended them against the Aristotelian dialectic taught at the time, and drew the wrath of the Sorbonne's doctors. In 1544, the French Parliament issued a ruling declaring Ramus reckless, arrogant and impudent for having dared to reprobate and condemn the train and art of logic... and forbidding the author to write or even teach contrary to Aristotle's doctrine, on pain of corporal punishment. Nevertheless, he retained many listeners and admirers, and the ruling condemning him was overturned by Henry II in 1547. A convert to the Protestant faith, he perished in the St. Bartholomew's Day massacres. In Latin and French, he wrote treatises on grammar, rhetoric, logic, arithmetic, algebra and geometry, and introduced the study of Greek at university. His Grammaire had first appeared in 1562 under the title Gramere, printed according to the bizarre [phonetic] spelling which the author had wanted to introduce and which he has since partly abandoned (Brunet). Our edition, the second, is partially printed in two columns, with the phonetic text opposite the "classical" text. Stained vellum. First endpaper missing. Provenance: Louis Humbert (bookplate), annotation complete coll., L.S. (Lucien Scheler).
