Attributed to Giovanni LARCIANI, known as the MASTER of the KRESS LANDSCAPES (1487 - 1527) Saint Sebastian. Poplar panel with two crosspieces Frame: in a carved wooden frame, Italian work of the 17th century. 58 x 42 cm Around three landscapes from the Kress collection (Washington, National Gallery of Art), Federico Zeri has assembled a coherent corpus of works dated from the first quarter of the 16th century in Florence, which are inspired by the compositions of Granacci and Fra Bartolomeo and in which one can also guess the stylization of paintings by the young Rosso. In 1998, Louis A. Waldman was able to identify the author of this group with Larciani, mentioned in documents and a contract in 1521. We find in his paintings a fluid brush, a particular way of describing the landscapes and rocks present in our panel and also the particular and layered arrangements of foliage. The anatomy of the saint's body and its treatment also recall the influence of Bacchiacca. Bibliography on the artist: - Federico.
