LA HARPE (Jean-François). Lycée or Course in Ancient and Modern Literature. Paris, Didot, 1821-1822. 16 vol. in-8, blond calf, smooth spines decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons, gilt title and tomaison, gilt roulette framing the boards, prize iron of the Concours général de l'Académie de Paris with royal arms on the boards, roulette on the necks and the chasses, gilt tr. (bound by Bradel). This classic work was first published between 1799 and 1805. Jean-François de La Harpe taught his literature course twice (1786-1788 and 1794-1799) in this kind of free university called the "Lycée", which played the role of a university in Paris at the end of the revolutionary period, before it was resurrected under the Empire. His work was appreciated by Chateaubriand and Sainte-Beuve. Slightly rubbed, small lack of leather on one cut, a few corners slightly dulled, small freckles in a few places, otherwise well bound.
