Null GODWIN (William). Les Avantures de Caleb Williams, ou Les Choses comme elle…
Description

GODWIN (William). Les Avantures de Caleb Williams, ou Les Choses comme elles sont; translated from the English [by Germain Garnier]. Paris, Henri Agasse, year IV, (1796). 2 volumes in-8, marbled fawn calf, ornate smooth spines, gilt fillet and garland on the boards, marbled edges (period binding). Skilful restorations to corners and headpieces. First French translation of Things are they are, or The Adventures of Caleb William (1794), which could be described as a modern "engaged novel", so much so that the author has (already) passed on all his social indignities in the adventures of his hero. The success of this novel was considerable both in England and on the continent, where translations multiplied, especially in French. With Enquiry concerning Political Justice, and its Influence on General Virtue and Happiness (1793), this is the second title to make known the non-conformist thought of William Godwin (1756-1836), husband of Mary Wollstonecraft in March 1797, and, let us recall, father of Mary Shelley. A good copy.
