Description

[GERVAISE (François-Armand). Les Véritables lettres d'Abeillard et d'Héloïse, tirées d'un ancien manuscrit latin trouvé dans la bibliothèque de François d'Amboise Conseiller d'Etat. Translated by the author of their life, with very curious historical & critical notes. Paris, François Barois, 1723. 2 vols. in-12, marbled fawn calf, spines decorated, title and appendices, cold fillet on the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, red edges (period binding). A good copy. First edition of the version given by Dom Gervaise (1660-1751), who had been briefly abbot of La Trappe after Rancé's resignation, but had to resign his office because of the accusations of sodomy made against him (cf. the details in Saint-Simon). It is strictly impossible to know whether the famous Epistolae duorum amantium copied around 1471 by Johannes de Vepria go back to Abelard and Heloise or not: surely old as far as style and lexicon are concerned, they are nonetheless anonymous in themselves. (Cioranescu, XVIII, 31 006.)
