Description

FIELDING (Henry). Julien l'Apostat, ou Voyage dans l'autre monde, translated (...) by Sieur Kauffmann, sworn interpreter at the Châtelet de Paris, for the German, English & Italian languages. Amsterdam, and is in Paris, Le Jay, 1768. 2 parts in one volume in-12, half tan basane, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets, edges speckled with red (late 18th century binding). Damage to the upper cap, rubbed edges. First French translation, very rare, of A Journey from this world to the next (1749). This is one of the least known texts by Henry Fieding (1707-1754), as it does not fit into any of the categories and genres to which the author accustomed his readers: playing with classical references, the brilliant English novelist reinvents the figures of the afterlife for a century both imbued with Christianity and already detached from its representations.
