In-12 of (2) ff. 275, (6) pp. spotted tan calf, spine ribbed and decorated (contemporary binding). Without the 2 catalogue pages. Title in black and red. pp. 167 and 275 are corrected as well as the errata. This is thus the original second edition of this first work by Fénelon. Rubbed, headbands torn off. (Tchemerzine, V, 164.) The Traité de l'Education des filles, composed around 1680, appeared in 1687, one year after the foundation of Saint-Cyr. Mme de Maintenon was inspired by Fénelon's ideas for her Institution. Fénelon's ideas on education in general are often almost modern but his position as a very committed Catholic priest blocks their development.
