Description

DUMAS (Alexandre). Kean, comedy in five acts. Paris, Barba, 1836. In-8, [3] ff. (false title and title, dedication to the Duchess of Abrantès), 263 pp. in paperback with printed cover. Small stains on the cover. First edition of this play to which Alexandre Dumas contributed only by a proofreading and by affixing his already known name to the title: in reality, it was composed by Emmanuel Théaulon (1787-1841) and Courcy. The subject is the extravagant life of the actor Edmund Kean (1787-1833), considered in his time as "the greatest actor in the world". First performed on 31 August 1836 at the Théâtre des Variétés, with Frédéric Lemaître in the title role, it was revived in 1891, and especially in 1953 in a revised version by Jean-Paul Sartre. Several film adaptations have also made it popular. (Vicar III, 345.)
