Description

CHARPENTIER (François). Le Voyage du valon tranquille, historical short story. New edition, with a preface and notes serving as a key. Paris, Chardin, P.-F. Aubin, 1796. In-12, engraved frontispiece, large margins copy, cherry half-sheepskin with corners, smooth spine partitioned in long, double gilt fillet on the boards (period binding). Two corners damaged, spine a little soiled. The first edition of this satirical relation was published for the first time in 1673 under a pseudonym (Ergaste). The academician François Charpentier (1620-1702) deviates here from his usual productions to narrate in a pleasant way a stay made at the castle of Nancré, which belonged at that time to the state counsellor Hotman. In this edition, printed in small numbers on wove paper, the key is due to Adry and Mercier de Saint-Léger. The copy is enriched with an engraved figure placed in the frontispiece. (Cioranescu, XVII, 18 777.)
