Description

Paris, Louis Billaine, 1663. In-12, 283-[3] pp. blond calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt foliage and hearts, title page in red marble, double framed with gilt fillets and roulette with heraldic fleurons in spandrels, roulette on the edges (period binding). First and only edition, shared between Louis Billaine and Claude Barbi "This poet (...) was attached to the house of Gaston de France duke of Orleans from 1652. He made himself agreeable to the court of this Prince who appointed him secretary of his cabinet and of his finances. He was in liaison with Ménage, Chapelain & Pellisson whose friendship he cultivated as much by esteem as by interest. He died in 1662 with some reputation. His friends published his poems (...) At Paris chez Claude Barbin 1663 in-12. Of all these pieces, only the story of Mona Lisa is known today because it gave rise to a dissertation by Boileau. The same subject had been put into verse by La Fontaine, and both pieces had illustrious supporters in literature. (...) [Boileau] proves that one cannot compare Bouillon's and La Fontaine's Jocondes because there is no comparison between a pleasant tale and a cold narration, between a flowery and cheerful invention and a dry and sad translation. Bonnegarde, Dictionnaire historique et critique, 1771, II, p. 75. "The dispute that arose over La Fontaine's Joconde compared to Bouillon's saved the poems of this mediocre versifier from oblivion, of which there is only one edition," Brunet. Bookmarks of the Paul Robin library and of the Palatinate library of Vienna (stamp of a double sold copy, on the verso of the title: "Palat. Vindobon dupl.") Slightly rubbed at the level of the spines and the cuts otherwise a fine copy of this rare work. (Brunet I, 1170.)
