[GOMBERVILLE (Marin LE ROY de). The Doctrine of Morals drawn from the philosophy of the Stoics: represented in one hundred pictures. And explained in a hundred speeches for the instruction of youth. Paris, Sevestre, 1646. Small folio, havana calf, spine decorated, triple gilt fillet framing the covers (later 19th c. binding). [17]-105 ff. including the title leaf with vignette, 2 full-page engraved titles of parts, 1 plate out of text "La Vertu au Roy", a full-page engraved portrait of the author, a plate out of text allegory of the King's education, a repeated cul-de-lampe, 4 bands and 4 lettrines, 103 full-page engraved emblems with title and poem, all engraved by Pierre Daret Ex-libris Edmond Lefevre and François Robert Secousse. Very beautiful book of emblems, reprint of the Emblemata horatiana by Otto Vaenius with figures retouched by Pierre Daret. It differs from the Emblemata horatiana in that each emblem is accompanied on the facing page by a long commentary (Chatelain). Binding very rubbed and worn, margins of the first 2 ff. restored, some small foxing or light soiling in places, some light spotting in places, margin restored on f. 17, russet stain on f. 31, ff. 40 and 41 shorter in ext. margin, corner restored on f. 42, ff. 104 and 105 slightly browned with shorter ext. and inf. margin.
