Description

[CLÉMENCET (Charles). Letters of Eusebius Philalethe to M. François Morenas, on his alleged Abridgement of the Ecclesiastical History, in which the ridiculous fables, the gross errors, the monstrous principles, & the horrible calumnies advanced by this Author, in favour of the Jesuits, against the disciples of Saint Augustine are refuted; in particular against the learned Abbot of Saint-Cyran, the great Arnauld, the nuns of Port-Royal, the holy Solitaries who inhabited that Desert, the Daughters of Childhood, the four Bishops, Fr. Quesnel, & generally all those who have shown zeal for the grace of Jesus Christ & the purity of Christian morals; to serve as a supplement to the Abrégé de l'Histoire Ecclésiastique [by Abbé Bonaventure Racine]. Liège, Gramme, 1755. In-12 of liv-606-[2] pp. marbled calf, spine ribbed and decorated, title page, red edges (contemporary binding). Second expanded edition of this work written by Dom Charles Clémencet, a Benedictine ardent defender of Port-Royal. He makes here an attack on the Abrégé de l'Histoire Ecclesiastique de l'Abbé Fleury continuée jusqu'en 1750, a work written by François Morenas, from Avignon, fierce opponent of the Jansenists. Heads torn off, corners dulled, some rubbing.
