Description

Paris, Imprimerie de la République, An VI-An VIII. 4 volumes in 2 volumes, and an atlas in-4 ; half brown morocco, spine ribbed and decorated, period boards preserved with gilt fillets, gilt edges (imitation 18th century binding). First edition, decorated with 2 folding tables, and accompanied by an atlas of 16 engraved maps and plates. At the end of 1790, Marchand left Marseille on the ship Le Solide, sailed around Tierra del Fuego and accomplished the second round-the-world voyage made by Frenchmen. He explored the Marquesas and Sandwich Islands, went to China and returned to Europe via the Indian Ocean and the Isle of France. The account of the voyage, published by Claret de Fleurieu, is preceded by the history of the discovery of the northwest coast of America, since the discovery of California by Cortes in 1537. It also contains important observations on navigation in the Pacific, valuable hydrographic charts and much information on the natural history of the countries visited. A very good copy in large vellum paper.
