KIRCHER (Athanasius). Physiologia Kircheriana experimentalis. Amsterdam, Jansson-Waesberge, 1680. Double-columned folio of (6)-248-(8) pp. with frontispiece, later brown half calf, six-ribbed spine, title-piece (early binding). First edition illustrated with an allegorical frontispiece and 172 vignettes in the text, ten engraved on copper, the others on wood. Collection of scientific experiments of the Jesuit Father Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680), published the year of his death by his disciple Johann Stephan Kestler: geophysics, astronomy and zoology, botany, chemistry and alchemy, acoustics, optics, mechanics, electricity and magnetism, hydraulics, pyrotechnics, etc. Among the wide spectrum of experiments carried out by the scholar stand out the first experiments of hypnotism on animals and the two remarkable representations of the magic lantern (pp. 125-126). A very good copy with large margins.
