Description

[BRANCAS-VILLENEUVE (André François de). Explanation of the flux and reflux, in their true circumstances, which shows with their exact exposition according to the academic memoirs, how much this inexplicable phenomenon, in any other cosmographic & physical system than the modern one, proves its accuracy & universality. Paris, Jombert, 1749. In-4, marbled calf, spine decorated with gilt arms in the centre of the boards (modern arms), red tr. (period binding). [1] XVI -489 (2) pp. illustrated with 4 vignettes on the headpieces. Uncommon first edition of this work in which the author proposes to explain the phenomenon of tides caused by the combined effect of the gravitational forces due to the Moon, the Sun and the rotation of the Earth around the barycentre of the Earth-Moon system. A few small rubs otherwise a very good copy with the arms of the Leusse family (Dauphiné), more particularly of Louis-Paul Comte de Leusse (1893-1951) with his armorial bookplate on the front cover. (OHR 2214.)
