Jules ROUFFET (1862 - 1931) The battle of Inkerman Oil on canvas signed lower left 150 x 120 cm Important tears in the upper part, wear. Wooden frame and gilded stucco, damaged (197 x 165 cm) The frame bears an important cartouche relating the following story: "The flag bearer of the 6th line had just been killed and the Eagle was about to fall to the enemy, when Colonel COZE seized it, waving it above his head and shouting energetically: CHILDREN! TO THE FLAG! Shot in the arm, this senior officer handed the flag to Lieutenant BIGOTTE, but he remained on the field to share the dangers and the efforts of his soldiers. (General FAY - Souvenir of the Crimean War° Excellent military painter, Jules Rouffet was a student of Jean-Paul Laurens (Fourquevaux 1838 - Paris 1921). He exhibited at the Salon from 1890. He is one of the founders of the Museum of the Army in Paris. The battle of Inkerman took place on November 5, 1854 between the Russian army and a Franco-British-Turkish-Piedmontese coalition during the Crimean War.
