Description

Plaster reproduction of the head of Laocoon 20th century (slight wear to the patina) Height : 53 cm 53 cm - Width : 35 cm - Depth : 30 cm Note : The face is upside down, the eyebrows are frowning. According to Virgil's account of this episode of the Trojan War in the Aeneid in the first century BC, Laocoon, priest of Apollo, suffocates, choked by two monstrous snakes sent by Poseidon. Revenge of the gods on Laocoon, the Trojan priest who tried to dissuade his countrymen from accepting the Trojan horse. The original was transported to the Louvre in 1798 by Napoleon's armies and exhibited in Paris until its return in 1815. The original group was cast in France in 1802 by the museum's casting workshop, created in 1794 to distribute models of works "snatched" from the papacy. Instead of the very expensive full plaster version of the group, partial prints are sometimes preferred, better suited to the study of anatomy and expression.
