[SAPPHO]. The Adventures of Sapho. In French, manuscript on paper. France, late 18th century. 1] f., 69 pp, 69 pp, [1] blank f., 64 pp, [1] f., 69 pp, 71 pp, [1] blank f., 63 pp, VI pp, [1] f. table. One volume in-4, bound in contemporary half basane, smooth spine decorated with amphora, fleurons and double gilt fillets, chiselled edges, rubbed edges, headpieces and corners. Translation of Alessandro Verri's book, Le Avventure di Saffo, poetessa di Mitilene, first published in Padua in 1780, which was presented as an Italian translation of an ancient Greek text and narrated in fictional form the poetess' love for Phaon and her suicide. Two translations were made in French, one published in 1803 by Renouard and given by J. Joly, and a second in 1818 by a certain P.-J.-B. Ch... It is not the translation of the mysterious P.J.B. Ch.
