Description

LEMAZURIER Pierre-David]. Notes recueillies de mes lectures En français et en latin, manuscript on paperFrance , first quarter of the 19th century 65 pp. Bound in vellum, spine with title "Notes 2" (period binding). (period binding). Size: 180 x 127 mm. This collection belongs to a scholar who meticulously notes his readings in this manuscript. His readings are eclectic: theatre, history, periodicals, travelogues, and so on. He reviews them. Among the works he analyses, we can cite: Constantin de Renneville, L'inquisition française ou histoire de la Bastille, 5 volumes, 1724. The author specifies that this edition is "estimated at 30 to 40 ff. in the Bibliographie de Cailleau, 3 vols. in-8°, Paris, 1790"; Simon-Nicolas Henri Linguet, Théâtre espagnol, 4 vols. in-12, 1770; or the Comédies de D. Pedro Calderon de la Barca, Spanish poet and playwright of the 17th century. The author, without clearly revealing his identity, informs us of his social status under the Empire (p. 30): "I was received as a resident member of the Academic Society of Sciences on May 24, 1806, on the presentation of Mr. M. de Beaumont and Ponce, and the report of Mr. Valant...". This information, as well as the presence of a signature "Lemazurier" on the upper counterfoil, allowed us to identify the author as Pierre-David Lemazurier (1775-1836), writer, historian and biographer of the theatre. He was, among other things, secretary of the administrative committee of the Théâtre-Français (now the Comédie-Française). He is famous for his stories and plays in verse which were read at the Athénée des Arts or at the Société académique des Sciences, and at the Société philotechnique.
