Description

[PERROT]. [ENGRAVING]. Manual of engraving with au [sic]forte and burin. In French, manuscript on paper. France, s.d., ca. 1795. Frontispiece title, 89 pp. (including 24 pp. of pen-and-ink drawings, and 4 pages of watercolour illustrations) - [2] ff. small in-4. Bound in replacement vellum. Unpublished manuscript by an amateur engraver. Short manual for the composition of which the author relied on Abraham Bosse and Jacques Callot. Most of the text is devoted to varnishes, hard and soft. Two of the colour plates are reproductions of coats of arms, the third reproduces a flower girl and the last, unfinished, a man riding a horse. The line illustrations are studies of male and female nudes, characters dressed in antique costumes, some genre scenes, such as duels, men on horseback (the costume of the characters allows to date this manuscript to the revolutionary period). There are also putti, some studies of masks as well as studies of horses and cattle. Did Perrot plan to have his work printed? Most of the illustrations bear the signature "Perrot del." in the lower right-hand corner.
