BERNARD (Pierre-Joseph). The Art of Love - Pauline and Theodore. In French, manuscript on paper. France, circa 1790 [2] ff, III pp. 83 pp, 1] blank page, 9 beautiful watercolours in shades of parma, grey wash and white highlights + [38] pages for Pauline and Theodore, poem in 4 songs, each song separated by a blank page + [24] pages of miscellaneous pieces, volume in-8, in French. of miscellaneous pieces, volume in-8, contemporary binding in porphyry calf, framed with triple gilt fillet on the boards, smooth spine decorated, edges gilt (binding worn: boards rubbed, spine broken, corners dulled, headbands worn). Carefully calligraphed volume of two rare works by a forgotten 18th century poet. Pierre-Joseph Bernard (1708-1775), nicknamed "Gentil-Bernard" by Voltaire, was protected by Mme de Pompadour to whom L'Art d'aimer is dedicated. For a long time Bernard was content to read extracts from this gallant poem in the salons before publishing it the year of his death. Pauline et Théodore was published under the title Phrosine et Mélidore in 1772. Following these two poems, calligraphed in a different way, are various pieces by different authors: "Epitre à Claudine" by P.-J. Bernard; "Extrait d'un voïage en Espagne"; Supplique à "Monseigneur l'Evêque d'Autun"; "Recueil de contes choisis dans ceux de M. de La Fontaine. By M. Moulin. 1790.» Of these tales only "The Nightingale" has been transcribed; "Maximes et Réflexions morales du Duc de La Rochefoucauld.
