France, 18th c. 241 pp. 19th century binding, purple half calf, double filleted boards, gilt arms in the centre, smooth spine decorated (corners dulled, cuffs rubbed, brown stains on the first few leaves) . Interesting manuscript of a major work of Voltaire to which have been assembled the main pieces that are usually attached to it. This long epic poem in 10 songs, both historical and allegorical was first published in 1728. Written as a tribute to Henry IV, it is also a hymn to tolerance. Contains: - Preface to the Henriade by King Frederick II of Prussia. - Preface for the Henriade by M. Marmontel. - Translation of a letter from M. Antoine Cocchi, Reader of Pisa, to M. Rinuccini, Secretary of State of Florence, on the Henriade. - Idea of the Henriade. - Abridged history of the events on which the fable of the poem of the Henriade is based. Bound with the arms of a member of the Guérin de Tencin family.
