LANCELOT (Claude). The garden of the Greek roots [Le jardin de Mnémosyne]. In Greek and French, manuscript on paper. France, early 19th century. 4] ff. (illustrated title, subtitle "the garden of Mnemosyne" and dedicatory epistle to Mnemosyne, prologue), 216 pp. carefully ruled in pencil, volume in-12 Italian style, red half calf, smooth spine decorated, gilt roulette frame on the boards covered with green paper in imitation of long-grained morocco, yellow edges, corners rubbed. This manuscript is a copy of the book of the same title by Claude Lancelot first published in 1657, an absolute bestseller in classical studies, used in all colleges (a handwritten note in pencil on the flyleaf reads "classe de 4e au Collège d'[Orléans?]"). It was constantly republished until 1904 with variations in the translations. This manuscript follows the 1741 edition that we were able to consult. An exquisite little volume, carefully calligraphed and illustrated by a good student of ancient Greek.
