Description

[YVELINES]. [MANTES]. Antiquities of the City of Mantes. In French, manuscript on paper. France, s. l., [ca. 1867]. 130 pages in brown ink on paper, engraving by Merian depicting Mantes and its fortifications [ca. 1650]. Bound in white half vellum and marbled boards, smooth spine. Title in red ink on first page. Unidentified bookplate with the number "PVP". Dimensions: 265 x 184 mm. A note at the end of the volume states that "this copy [...] was made on a manuscript from the beginning of the 18th century belonging to Mr. Coqueret, clerk of the justice of the peace of Limay, in July 1867. This version is that of Aubé. The author of the manuscript does not hide his enthusiasm for his little town, "one of the most beautiful and accomplished in the Province", whose "antiquity can only be very great". He then traces its history from the beginnings of Christianity and the sending to Gaul of Saint Nicaise, the first bishop of Rouen, who evangelized the whole region. He closes his story with the Corpus Christi procession on June 6, 1771. Our scholar has done important research on the history of his city, of which he details the embellishments, the political events that took place there, and the religious history. An engraving by Matthaüs Mérian of the city of Mantes-la-Jolie around 1650 has been added at the beginning of the volume. On the left, one can see the former convent of the Cordeliers, and within the city walls, the collegiate church of Notre-Dame as well as the castle destroyed in 1719. The primary source of this manuscript is a manuscript from the Bibliothèque nationale (Arsenal, ms n°4094), entitled Antiquités de la ville de Mantes, whose author is Jean de Chévremont, parish priest of Vert at the end of the 17th century. Moreover, the author uses here the original title chosen by Jean de Chévremont. To this first work, additions were made in 1718 by Jean Louis Aubé (1696-1725), clerk of the maréchaussée and of the provostry of the city of Mantes (1721) in his Livre des antiquités de Mantes (Mantes, Bibliothèque municipale, ms. 24).
