PALA STELE REPRESENTING SURYA. Black stone probably Phyllite. Small stele of Surya, god of the Sun, represented standing holding in each hand lotuses, surrounded by his four wives. In the lower part are represented the seven horses that pull his chariot. The god is surmounted by celestial creatures. Bengal, circa 12th century, Pala period.
