Huysmans, Jacob (attr.), Antwerp 1630 - London 1696, Portrait of a Commander in Armour before Battle Turmoil in Gunsmoke. Oil/w.p., double, Huysmans went to England about 1660, in 1664 he is praised in the famous diary of Samuel Pepys besides Peter Lely as portrait and history painter and receives numerous commissions at the court of Charles II in the following time. Presumably of Catholic faith he was soon called upon as portrait painter by Catherine of Braganza, who as a Catholic was not crowned queen, and is said to have soon called himself "Her Majesty's Painter", 136 x 111 cm.
