ERASMUS. THE PRAISE OF MADNESS. Amsterdam, François L'Honoré, 1745. Large in-12 red morocco with lace coat of arms, spine ribbed and decorated, inner border, threaded edges (period binding). Some added plates are trimmed, 4 tiny wormholes in the lower box. COUNTERFEIT of the translation of Geudeville published in 1731 by the same publisher and ILLUSTRATED with a frontispiece, a figure with the portraits of Erasmus, Morus and Holbein, 75 WOODEN in the text and 6 folding plates engraved in intaglio after Holbein. EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE enriched with 45 intaglio ILLUSTRATIONS from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, some signed Bry, Gillot, Eisen, pasted on strong laid paper. Many plates come from a remarkable 16th century suite close to the style of Bruegel.
