Description

DIDEROT and D'ALEMBERT. ENCYCLOPEDIA, or Reasoned Dictionary of Sciences, Arts and Trades, by a Society of People of Letters. 39 volumes in-4 marbled fawn calf, spine ribbed and decorated, marbled edges (period binding). Restorations to the binding of several volumes, some wear and tear, lack of leather and defects of use. Geneva, Pellet, 1777-79. THIRD EDITION OF THIS MONUMENTAL PUBLICATION. It consists of 39 volumes, 36 volumes of text and 3 volumes of plates. The illustration includes TWO PORTRAITS, one by Diderot, the other by d'Alembert, both drawn by Cochin and engraved by Cathelin, as well as 495 copper engravings reproduced on 446 off-text plates, many of them folding or double-page; some folding off-text tables are distributed in the text volumes. Copy WITHOUT the six volumes of table which were printed in Lyon in 1780, and which are often missing (cf. Tchemerzine); these volumes are not mentioned by Brunet. This edition includes the corrections and additions made to the articles of the Paris edition. It also contains new articles, indicated by the letters "A.N.". These articles were not found in the Dictionary or in the Supplements. The authors of the articles are indicated by letters whose key is given in the first pages of volume 7. Thus we learn that the letter "o" corresponds to the Marquis de Condorcet, while the letter "S" is attributed to Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The last volume of text, volume 36, contains additions to some of the articles, and the praises of some of the contributors to the work, including Montesquieu, Du Marsais, Lenglet Du Fresnoy and Edme Mallet. The editors have added in the last volume of text, volume 36, a plate (pl. V and XVI printed on the same sheet) containing 10 figures to illustrate the article Horlogerie Différents Échappements. This plate is accompanied by an explanatory text leaf. A GOOD COPY.
