[ATLAS]. CASSINI DE THURY (César-François). MAP WHICH COMPRISES ALL THE PLACES OF FRANCE which have been determined by Geometrical Operations. Paris, sur le Quay de l'Horloge, en la maison de feu Mr. Delisle, sous le privilège de l'Académie Royale des Sciences, no date [1747]. In-quarto blond calf, triple gilt fillet on the boards, arms stamped in gold in the centre, spine with five raised bands, gilt caissons decorated with small irons, red morocco title page, red edges (contemporary binding). Lower headband frayed, beginning of a split at the upper jaw, two corners dulled, leather missing at the side cut of the lower board, small spalls. MAP OF THE TRIANGULATION OF FRANCE, consisting of 18 folding maps all mounted on tabs. The Cassini map or map of the Academy is the first topographic and geometrical map established at a scale of 1/86 400 of the whole kingdom of France. This map was a real innovation for its time and a decisive technical advance. It was the first map to be based on geodetic triangulation, which took more than 60 years to establish.
