PHILIPPE IV le Bel (5 October 1285 - 30 November 1314). Golden Agnel (16 January 1311). 4,09 g. Nimbed paschal lamb standing left, turning his head towards a banner. R/ A leafy cross within a quatrefoil flory and four lilies. D. 212. C. 199. L. 216. Fr. 258. Wide flan. A very fine copy. Provenance : sale Paris, Hôtel Drouot, 20 November 1961, n° 217. The golden lamb takes its name from the paschal lamb which is represented on it. Under John the Good, a larger coin was given the name of golden sheep. The Paschal lamb is shown nimbed.
