Oak master's chest of drawers. W : 73 cm D : 42 cm H : 58 cm

A large rectangular chest of drawers in wood and mahogany veneer. It opens onto three rows of five drawers with oak inlays, three of which are in the entablature and two with concealed crossbars in the central body. The uprights are straight, fluted and grooved. They stand on tapered legs with twisted flutes. It is adorned with rich ormolu and chased bronze fittings, including friezes of foliate scrolls, rosettes, frames with rows of pearls, darts and rais de cœur, cartouche escutcheons, macaron pull rings and foliate sabots. Grey-veined white marble top. Stamped: (on the bases of the jambs) J. DAUTRICHE- Jacques Van Oostenrick dit Dautriche. Cited as Master in 1765 and M.C. CRAMER - Mathieu - Guillaume CRAMER . This commode presents a perfectly balanced architecture enhanced by its mahogany panels embellished with finely chased and gilded bronze trim. It is the result of a collaboration between the designer Jacques D'Autriche and Mathieu-Guillaume Cramer, who marketed it. A few years after completing his master's degree, Cramer set up shop on rue du Bac as a cabinetmaker. He employed Jacques D'Autriche, whose name appears in the list of his creditors for "supplies delivered". Jacques Dautriche's production is represented by furniture of the highest quality, which falls into two periods. While the first period featured furniture in marquetry, the second, known as neoclassical and in vogue from the early 1760s, was characterized by the use of mahogany wood. Comte François de Salverte, in his work on 18th-century cabinetmakers, mentions a comparable chest of drawers in the collection of Baron de Beurnonville, described as "a chest of drawers of this type resting on oblique fluted legs and trimmed with bronzes in the manner of Thomire", and a similar secretary, adorned with an attractive post frieze, in the collection of Madame Becq de Fouquières.
