"Ferdinand Bellermann" and titled and dated on the left. In August 1853, Ferdinand Bellermann embarked on his first trip to Italy together with the painter Max Schmidt. On 27 August he reached Rome, where Bellermann returned again and again in the following months. He made numerous drawings of Rome and its surroundings, including atmospheric landscape views and studies of ancient Roman ruins. This watercolour shows the ruins of the Aqua Claudia, an ancient Roman water conduit whose construction was completed in 52 AD under Emperor Claudius and served to supply the city of Rome with water. Then to Berlin, where from 1833, initially in Carl Blechen's class, he studies landscape painting for eight years at the Prussian Academy of Arts. At the same time visits the studio of August Wilhelm Schirmer, who becomes Blechen's successor. 1837 travels to the Harz Mountains, 1839 with Friedrich Preller the Elder to Hesse and Rügen, summer 1840 via Belgium and Holland to Norway. 1842-1845 travels to Venezuela, including Caracas, La Guaira, Puerto Cabello, Angostura, Tovar, and Merida in the Andes. After his return he became drawing teacher at the Royal Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Berlin, 1857 he was appointed professor at the academy of arts in Berlin, 1866 he succeeded Schirmer as head of the class for landscape painting. 1853/54 as well as 1877 journey to Italy.
