From 1778 he studied theology in Leipzig as well as draughtsmanship at the academy of drawing, painting and architecture under A.F. Oeser. From 1783 he lived in Dresden and took private lessons with Johann Christian Klengel. Participation in the Dresden academy exhibition. 1785 again resident in Leipzig, friendship with Schiller. Settled in Rome in 1789, complete change of style due to influence of artists like Koch and Carstens. In his time he was regarded as a central figure in the German artists' colony in Rome and as a leading landscape painter.1810 member of the Prussian Academy of Arts as well as 1813 admission to the Accademia di San Luca. 1830 appointment as member of the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich and 1839 as royal Bavarian court painter.
