Together with friends he discovered Goppeln near Dresden as a place for painting a. became part of the group "Goppelner Schule", which joined the new trend of open-air painting in Germany. Together with Hans Unger he travels through Italy for two years. Afterwards he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris, where he devoted himself intensively to drawing nudes. In 1900 he was awarded a prize at the World Exhibition in Paris, a medal at the World Exhibition in Chicago and a gold medal at the World Exhibition in St. Louis. After his studies he settled again in Dresden and was among others part of the group of the Dresden "Secessionists".
