The signature probably lost (?) by the reduction of the format. At the back side on the lower left probably artist's name and title in pencil by another hand. Framed in a profiled gold-coloured wooden frame. The sitter is most likely the artist's father-in-law, Paul Ahnert, father of the painter Gussy Ahnert-Hippold, to whom Erhard Hippold had been married since 1936. The canvas partly raised as well as with pronounced age craquelure, partly with cupping of the painting layer (in the area of the background). A tiny missing part of the painting layer mi.li. (in the area of the reverse). Wed. horizontal cracks in the painting layer. Partly slightly scratched, the marginal areas partially with abrasion. Measures: 100 x 75,5 cm, ra. 111,5 x 87,5 cm. Erhard Hippold 1909 Wilkau - 1972 Bad Gottleuba Apprenticeship as porcelain painter. 1928-31 pupil of the Dresden school of arts and crafts under Carl Rade, until 1933 studies at the Dresden academy of arts under Ferdinand Dorsch, master pupil under Max Feldbauer. In this year he had to leave the academy for political reasons. Married to the Dix student Gussy Ahnert. From 1945 he lived with her as a freelance artist in Radebeul. Friendship with the painter Carl Lohse, with whom he spent several study visits at the Baltic Sea. Since 1950 more intensive occupation with graphics, especially etchings and lithographs.
