Inscribed on the upper right in gold letters "M-M 74 IAHR ALT" and underneath the signature "F. HEYSER PINX", probably covered by the artist's hand. U.li. Remains of a hardly legible signature "F[...]". Along the left edge of the picture small nail holes of previous mounting (picture format somewhat enlarged by the artist as well as reduced at the right margin). Partially inconspicuous early shrinkage crack. Canvas deformations at the corners. Numerous small retouchings, esp. at the upper corner areas as well as larger ones at the lower left. Verso stretcher frame corner joints on right bar distorted. Dimensions: 90,5 x 68,5 cm. Friedrich Wilhelm Theodor Heyser 1857 Gnoien (Mecklenburg) - 1921 Dresden 1880-83 Studies at the academy of arts in Dresden under Leon Pohle and Victor Paul Mohn, later under Ferdinand Keller in Karlsruhe. In 1890 short stay at the Academie Julian. After his return Heyser lived in Berlin, Bad Harzburg and Dresden, where he worked as a portrait and history painter. His works included portraits of poets, fine artists and members of the princely nobility, as well as a series of genre scenes, mostly based on works from German poetry.
