He studied at the Munich Academy under Professor Johann Leonhard Raab and Ludwig von Löfftz. Later he changed to the academy of arts in Karlsruhe. After his studies he travelled to Holland, Spain, Italy and Morocco. He painted mainly Dutch interiors and scenes from folk life.
