Verso inscribed by a foreign hand on a label in old ink "Christian Morgenstern 1805-1867" as well as with a blue owner's note "Eigentum von Professor Dr Kurt v Raunen Universität Münski i.W.". Painting layer in the marginal areas partially with abrasion and loss of colour, on the left margin slight traces of scratching. Corner at lower right with retouching, verso with glue remains of an older mounting as well as with brown stains. Dimensions: 20,5 x 30,2 cm. From 1818 as assistant with Cornelius Suhr on a two-year journey through the whole of Germany. 1822 trip to Russia. 1824 pupil of Siegfried Bendixen in Hamburg. 1827/28 finishes his education at the academy in Copenhagen, study trips through Sweden and Norway. 1830 moves to Munich. 1839 return to Hamburg, member of the Hamburg artists' association of 1832. 1841 trip to Italy with the landscape painter Eduard Schleich and later further journeys.
