Framed in a black wooden moulding with a flat fillet and a gold-coloured, decorated visible moulding. Backing mounted. Partly slightly standing age craquelure and climatic edge. Numerous older, small line retouchings as well as larger ones in the background. Left hand of Mary Magdalene partly painted over. Losses of the painting layer at the trimmed edges of the picture in the area of the fold (picture size reduced). Yellowed varnish. Verso later stretcher and doubling canvas painted dark. From a family of artists, grand-nephew of the painter Palma Vecchio. Actually Jacopo Negretti, but he signed consequently "Palma". First education probably by his father. According to his biographer Ridolfi he was promoted by the Duke of Urbino, Guidobaldo II della Rovere. Until 1567 he lived at his court in Pesaro and studied the ducal collections. After a stay in Rome he returned to Venice in 1570, stylistically following Tintoretto, Veronese and Bassano. After fire in 1577 commissioned to restore the Doge's Palace, e.g. painting the ceiling in the Hall of the Great Council (Sala del Maggior Consiglio). 1583 Commission to paint the oratory in the Hospice of the Order of the Crociferi in Venice. After 1600 further paintings for the church of Santa Maria Assunta. Palma il Giovane is considered a pioneer of the early Baroque in Venice.
