Description

Tondino Faenza, verso 1525 ,

Majolica decorated with fire colours. Diameter 24.6 cm. Conservation: broken in several fragments with integrations and reassembled after restoration. Thin-walled round dish with a wide flat brim in majolica, decorated with a "porcelain" pinwheel motif on the brim and a bird with a long beak in the cavetto. The reverse has a rare "oriental" motif of rapid execution in cobalt monochrome. The elegant porcelain decoration is in the usual Faenza graphic formula. The motif on the back is unusual: a consistent roundel is kept in the collections of the Castello Sforzesco. See C. Ravanelli Guidotti, card, in R. Ausenda, edited by Museo d'Arti Applicate. Le Ceramiche, T. I, Milan 2000, pp.121-122, n. 117.
