Description

Tondino Faenza, inizio del XVI secolo ,

Majolica decorated in polychrome with a large fire. Brand: absent. Diameter: 25.6 cm. Conservation: broken into several fragments and reassembled during restoration. Majolica roundel decorated on the brim with a wide blue band with a small arch motif, outlined by orange rope motifs, and with a starry pinwheel motif in the central roundel. The back has a blue monochrome stocking motif. The ornamentation bears similarities to the Faentine decorations of the first quarter of the 16th century. Similar in decorative formula and colouring is the dish with Medici coat-of-arms from the Fanfani collection in the International Ceramics Museum of Faenza. See C.Ravanelli Guidotti, La donazione Angiolo Fanfani, Ceramiche dal Medioevo al XX secolo, Faenza 1990, pp. 265, n.139.
