Description

Boccale Romagna, probabilmente Faenza, fine del XIV secolo (?) ,

Archaic majolica painted in two-tone green-brown. Height 23.5 cm. Conservation: broken in several fragments and reassembled during restoration; additions, in particular to the upper rim. Pyriform mug on a low foot, with trilobed mouth and curved handle, externally coated with tin-poor enamel. A scale motif drawn in green with stylised flowers in brown dresses the body and a horizontal braid motif runs across the neck. This jug is familiar with the archaic maiolica of Faenza production from the end of the 14th century (Cf. Ravanelli Guidotti, Thesaurus of works of the Faenza tradition in the collections of the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Faenza 1998, pp. 63, 89-90). This decorative formula was also diffused in other ceramic centres in the region.
